According to a study posted on the website of BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, up to 90 per cent of pregnant women observe fasting during Ramadan to share the cultural experience with their families although they are generally exempted under the Islamic law. These women choose to fast after getting a clearance from their respective doctors. However, it is essential that they follow a routine to ensure good health of their babies during this period.

“Pregnant women are strongly advised to take all precautions when fasting. They should discuss this with their obstetricians, who can guide them on what food to eat during Suhoor (morning meal) and Iftar (evening meal) to ensure a balanced diet and proper intake of essential nutrients,” said Dr Desislava, IVI Fetal Medical Centre,
Abu Dhabi.

Meeting the nutrient and fluid requirement is critical to the healthy development of the baby. As such, Dr. Desislava emphasised the need to take plenty of fluids and food with high-water content during Suhoor and Iftar. Fruits, vegetables, soups, stews, and porridge are part of the expert’s recommendations. She specializes in managing both low & high-risk pregnancies for women and has helped many difficult pregnancies get to term for a healthy delivery. High-energy dishes and those that are rich in protein and fibre during the morning meals are definitely an essential, while fresh or dried fruits and food that are rich in sugar are ideal when breaking fast in the evening for those expecting.

Consuming low glycaemic index food especially during Suhoor such as wholemeal pasta, wholemeal bread, oat and bran-based cereals, beans, and unsalted nuts is advised. Too many salty foods are to be avoided during the morning meal as these can make one feel thirsty throughout the day. In addition, pregnant women should not miss taking their folic acid and vitamin D as instructed by their doctors.

“It is crucial for pregnant women to know these dietary considerations when fasting during the holy month. They should also be in touch with their doctors at all times so that they will be properly guided all throughout this journey,” concluded
Dr. Desislava.
