With Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (March) now underway, experts at one of the region’s leading medical facilities is urging at risk groups to consider undergoing screening for the disease.

Expert in colorectal conditions Professor Dr. Hassan Siegfried Abou-Rebyeh, who is both a Gastroenterology consultant and Head of Department at Burjeel Hospital, Abu Dhabi, with over 25 years’ experience across the world including the USA, UK and Africa, is helping to raise awareness and prevent needless deaths from colorectal cancer.

“Colorectal cancer is most common in those aged 50 or over and affects all different ethnic and racial groups.  But there is a lack of awareness about how common and how fatal it can be – in fact it’s the second leading cause of death from cancer, after breast cancer, and the second most common male cancer in the UAE”, commented Dr. Hassan Siegfried Abou-Rebyeh.

In fact, amongst females in the UAE, colorectal is the third most common cancer.  Symptoms include change of bowel habits, anal bleeding and anaemia-like symptoms including palpitations and tiredness.

But due to some of these symptoms, amongst both genders, embarrassment and a lack of education about the disease often discourage people from seeking early medical help.

Now, Dr. Hassan and his team of experts from Burjeel Hospital are joining others from around the world during Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month to raise awareness and take action towards prevention.

This includes encouraging at risk groups to exercise regularly, as this is shown to reduce the risk.  They are also urging general care doctors and nurses to talk to patients aged 50+ about the importance of screening.

Burjeel Hospital’s team, of which Dr. Hassan is a key consultant, have developed an advanced recovery programme for the minimally invasive surgery they have undertaken on colorectal cancer patients that saw one man walking two days after the procedure.

“If everyone aged 50 and over was screened regularly, 6 out of 10 deaths could be prevented”, he concluded.
